Calvin Harris has been a roll, churning out catchy dance chart toppers since collaborating on "We Found Love" with songstress Rihanna in 2011. So, when a listener hears the impeccable pop-sounding production on "Pray To God", the official sixth single off his fourth studio album Motion, featuring the vocals of GRAMMY-nominated HAIM it should come as no big surprise.
Following the successful chart runs of "Summer", the John Newman-assisted "Blame" and the adorable Ellie Goulding collaboration "Outside", the new disco-laced single appears ready to dominate the airwaves with intriguing vocals and EDM beats which pull the HAIM girls out of their usual pop-rock comfort zone. It could be the performances of the featured artists, the background keyboards or the eerie overall vibe, but this new effort screams 90s dance... and that's alright with me.
"Pray To God" seemed to be one of the moments most critics highlighted as an excellent piece of work from the mixed response of the album as a whole. HAIM may not have found immense success in the states just yet, they are killing it in the UK and Australia though, but the new single could be a new start for them. The moody, euphoric tone of the track sounds perfect for the dance floor, maybe a place the girls truly belong.
"The lights in my eyes, they disappeared, the visions in my mind are enough to keep me from fear," HAIM sings on one of the well-crafted verses, as they admit they would do things differently the second time around. The girls command the spotlight, appearing stronger than the dance production that surrounds them... that's a tough thing to accomplish. And then the chorus, the majestic, pop chorus comes through and everything is perfect in the world.
While the single is not new, it's featured on an album released back in November, the accompanying music video is. HAIM... almost every other publication has stated this, I know... appear to be giving their best Stevie Nicks impersonation, or their best American Horror Story: Coven auditions, with their all black costumes and moody appearances. It's a good look.
It may be the sixth single off an album, but "Pray To God" may just be one of the strongest. It's intriguing, it's unique and HAIM truly shines bright in the dark atmosphere. Now, let's just hope the Gwen Stefani collaboration gets released next.
